What Are the Main Philosophical Principles of Determinism
If Every Effect Has a Cause, Is Freedom Just a Beautiful Illusion?
“If everything is caused, then even your thoughts were born before you realized them.”
– Ersan Karavelioğlu
① What Is Determinism
A Universe That Doesn’t Improvise — Only Executes a Script
Determinism is the philosophical view that every event or state of affairs — including every human decision and action — is the consequence of previous events in accordance with the laws of nature.
“Determinism isn’t about fate — it’s about unbroken chains of causation.”
② Core Principles of Determinism
The Structure of a Universe Without Surprises
| Causal Necessity | Every event has a cause; nothing happens without a reason |
| Universal Lawfulness | The universe is governed by fixed laws that apply to all events |
| Predictability (in theory) | If we knew all initial conditions, we could predict every future event |
| No Metaphysical Freedom | Free will is limited or non-existent, as choices stem from prior causes |
| Mechanistic Naturalism | All phenomena, including thoughts and choices, are subject to physical laws |
If an intelligence knew the location and momentum of every atom in the universe,
it could calculate the past and future entirely.
③ Types of Determinism
Not All Chains Are Forged the Same
| Hard Determinism | Free will is an illusion; everything is causally determined |
| Soft Determinism (Compatibilism) | Free will can exist within determinism — if choices align with one’s character |
| Logical Determinism | Future truths are already determined (e.g., “You will do X”) |
| Theological Determinism | Divine foreknowledge predetermines all events |
| Biological/Psychological Determinism | Human behavior is shaped by genetics or past experiences |
④ Implications: Freedom, Responsibility & Identity
If You Had No Choice... Are You Still Guilty?

Yet:
“Even if the script is written, the performance still feels real.”
– Ersan Karavelioğlu
That’s why Compatibilism exists — the view that freedom is choosing in accordance with who you are, even if who you are is itself determined.
Final Thought:
“Determinism doesn’t say you’re not real — only that your reality unfolds like poetry written in invisible ink.”
– Ersan Karavelioğlu
